Bad time for print papers in US

leave a comment »

Those of us who are following the media scene in the US would know it’s a really bad time for newspapers there. It seems every few days you hear of job cuts and even newspaper closures.

The best blogs are usually those that are niche and maintained by an industry insider. One interesting blog is Paper Cuts, maintained by Erica Smith, a multimedia producer at the St Louis Post-Dispatch.

She has some pretty interesting sections in her blog that tell different things about the floundering newspaper industry in the US.

Here is a section on layoffs. So far 8097 newspaper jobs have been lost in the US this year.

And here, you can find newspapers that have closed.

Here, newspapers that have moved onto the web.

While the demise of newspapers is a sad thing for those who have lost their jobs there, it is a boon for online media, which is flourishing – though not enough to absorb all who have lost their old media jobs.
